Writer in Brooklyn & the Bay

I’m a staff product writer at Duolingo and can’t keep my eyes open in photos. I’ve done similar work at Uber, Instagram, Facebook, and Opendoor. Based mostly in Brooklyn, occasionally in Santa Cruz.

Appreciate you stopping by.

This is where you can find a few of my projects. Send me a note if there’s more you’d like to see.

The Digit App

I did all the ux writing for the Digit app, including onboarding flows, modals, labels, push notifications, etc. I worked with product designers, PMs, engineers, and our lovely legal team to get this 0-1 product across the finish line. The app store images below highlight the main benefits of the automated banking app.

Introducing Direct

We put this together for the release of our smart bank, Digit Direct. I wrote the script, did the VO, and worked with an illustrator to bring it to life. I don’t foresee a lucrative career as a voice actor anytime soon. With about 30,000 signups, we considered the campaign a success.

Digit website

The full site is live, tap the link below to check it out. I wrote all the copy and worked with our design team to put together the architecture, navigation, and narrative. We focused on four core parts of the financial picture: spending, budgeting, saving, and investing. A mix of product shots, lifestyle photography, video, and illustration brings personality and warmth to an app that totally automates your finances.

Promote on Instagram

We redesigned the self-service ad flow on Instagram. Previously, you could launch a campaign with a click. It was great in theory, but retention was really poor. This guided flow with additional education built into each screen increased retention (tough to move and hard to measure) by more than 15%.

Naming projects

I’ve worked on a bunch of names, labels, and descriptions over the years and every project is super different and somehow exactly the same. There’s a lot of subjectivity in naming, so I try to make the process transparent and bring people along for the ride.

  • Instagram Reels

I led the naming process for Instagram’s short-form video tool. This included explorations, interviews with team members, user research, legal review, translations, and approvals all the way to the top.

  • Digit Direct

We call it “The Bank Account with a Brain” in marketing materials, but Direct is the name we cleared with our partner bank. There are lots of interesting hurdles when it comes to naming stuff in fintech.

  • Uber Greenlight Hubs

I led the naming process for Uber’s driver support program. I also worked on other naming projects there, like Visa Local Offers and UberPool (which was more difficult to name than you’d think).

Uber’s impact and origin story

During the first of many rebrands, I was asked by Uber’s policy team to put together a few pages that show how cities can benefit from Uber’s arrival. These pages would be a reference point when local governments asked why Uber should be allowed to operate.

Considering the amount of stakeholders and involvement of Uber’s then CEO, I’ve always been proud of how these turned out. The policy pages hit on a few important points (opportunity, equity, safety) and Uber’s story is short and sweet. Apologies for the blurry images, they’re hella old.

Uber MVP Program

As part of Uber’s partnership with the Warriors, we had access to a few former players to film a video for the Uber MVP program. I came up with the concept, wrote this script. and was on site while we filmed it — rewriting on the fly to make some of the jokes land.
